Rafters wearing and not wearing life jackets on the Delaware River
BARRYVILLE – A South Jersey man drowned in the Delaware River over the weekend while swimming off Milford Beach near the Delaware Water Gap in Pennsylvania.  It took first responders hours to find his body after he went under.
Sullivan County Commissioner of Public Safety, Scott Schulte, has a warning for those who take to the area’s waterways this summer.

If you want to enjoy the summer safely be smart about the consumption of alcohol because while you may not be intoxicated to the point where you feel like you don’t have control of your faculties it’s just one more factor that could lead to your unexpected slip, fall, and then submersion,” he said.
Schulte went on to add, ”Tragedies like this can be prevented don’t overestimate your ability to to battle a strong current.  Be smart about the use of personal flotation devices.  They’re readily accessible, they’re affordable, and along the Delaware, you have opportunities to borrow a personal flotation device.”
