BREWSTER – Route 684 as it traverses Putnam County often resembles a parking lot with heavy traffic and congestion.
During the holidays, conditions often worsen with vehicles passing through the county en route to I-84 to the north or Route 287 to the south.
Pre-July 4th holiday traffic came to a standstill when a vehicle went out of control just north of the county line and overturned critically injuring its driver that necessitated EMS from Brewster and Croton Falls along with Putnam paramedics to summon a medivac chopper.
The air rescue vehicle landed on the interstate forcing police and firefighters to shutter the six lane road allowing for flight staff to triage the patient prior to transporting him to the Westchester Medical Center.
Traffic was backed up for miles not only on Route 684 but along Route 6, 22 and 84 since motorists exited the interstate to avoid the congestion.
