BARRYVILLE – An Augusta, Maine man is in stable condition at an area hospital after a state trooper shot him on Tuesday.

On July 2 at about 2:15 p.m., troopers in Sullivan County responded to a report of a suspicious man in a vehicle at a business on Route 97 in Barryville. When police located the man, he told them he had a gun and that he would shoot the troopers.

Troopers attempted to stop the man, later identified as Paul Gosselin, 63, when he fled to a second business on Route 97 and got out of his vehicle.

He then got back in and began to drive in the direction of a Town of Lumberland constable who was on foot in proximity to Gosselin’s car.

A trooper on the scene saw the vehicle accelerating toward the constable and fired shots at the car striking Gosselin one time.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the State Police at 845-344-5300.
