Storm damage in Rhinebeck

MID-HUDSON -The storm that tore through the region Sunday afternoon brought down tree limbs and knocked out power.

Some 10 miles south of the area where the storm claimed a life in Colchester, the Livingston Manor area received moderate rains.

In the Rhinebeck-Red Hook area, residents recounted the experience.

Carole Anne described what she heard.

“It was just all of a sudden it got completely dark. The winds started to go sideways. It was pouring in our back sliding glass door and then you could hear the crashing of trees and like these wild sounds, which I would assume were the trees being uprooted,” she said.

In the Town of Fishkill, the storm downed trees and caused power outage. Town Supervisor Ozzy Albra said most of the damage was in the northern part of the Town. State Route 82 was closed near Lake Road. Town roads Longview and Nantucket were also closed.

Central Hudson was on the scene to repair outages.

One tree hit a house but there were no injuries reported.

Highway Superintendent Istvan and his crews were out clearing roads.

Two inches of rain was recorded in Carmel within a 30-minute period as the mercury dropped 20 degrees.

NYSEG reported 1,000 customers losing power primarily in the Putnam Valley area. Orange and Rockland and Central Hudson reported similar outages in their service territories.

Many roads became flooded with the monsoon rains. A resident of Carmel reported it took her more than one hour to travel from the Highlands Shopping Center off Route 312 in Southeast to her residence near Putnam Hospital Center—a normal 10-minute trip.

Similar incidents were reported throughout low-lying areas of Cold Spring and Philipstown.
