CARMEL – Putnam County police agencies are launching a campaign to reduce impaired driving in advance of the Fourth of July holiday celebration.  Putnam County Sheriff Kevin McConville made the announcement last week, noting that the campaign is a coordinated effort between the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Carmel police department, Kent police department, and STOP-DWI coordinators.

The Fourth of July extended weekend is historically a deadly period for impaired driving, according to McConville, adding “This year the 4th of July falls on a Thursday so we expect heavy traveling to begin on Wednesday, July 3rd.”

The statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign will start on July 3, 2024, and will end on July 7, 2024.  The STOP-DWI July 4th High Visibility Engagement Campaign is one of many statewide initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The Statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign also targets Memorial Day, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the Holiday Season, Super Bowl weekend, and St. Patrick’s Day.

“Americans love to celebrate the Fourth of July with family, friends, food, and fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on the nation’s roads. The fact is this iconic American holiday is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to impaired-driving crashes,” McConville said to discourage impaired driving.
