COLD SPRING- Motorists traversing Route 9D north of Cold Spring will soon be experiencing traffic delays when the New York State DOT closes the southbound lane of Breakneck Tunnel allowing for the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Metro-North tracks on the north side of the tunnel.

Word of the closure was made Saturday by Nelsonville Mayor Chris Winward who reported being informed by the state parks department that the southbound lane of the tunnel would be closed for four months, with alternating traffic in the northbound lane controlled by traffic lights. A 5-foot-wide walkway will be added to the southbound lane, along with a crosswalk over Route 9D.

Winward called it “shocking” that a plan hadn’t been released to inform the thousands of hikers who use trails off Route 9D each summer.

The Breakneck trailhead is expected to close this fall for an extended period due to construction on the Fjord Trail Bridge.
