TOWN OF SOUTHEAST – A routine traffic stop in Southeast has led to the arrest of a Connecticut man on weapons possession charges.

The time was 1:15 a.m. Wednesday when a Putnam County deputy observed a vehicle being driven northbound on Route 22 near the I-684 interchange with an obscured rear license plate.

Undersheriff Thomas Lindert said Friday a traffic stop was made and the driver, Mathew Conti, 27, of Danbury was found to have a revoked New York driver’s license from 2017. “While interviewing Conti, a handgun was discovered inside the vehicle for he had no permit to possess in New York State.”

Conti was charged with a felony charge of criminal possession of a weapon as well as aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Conti was arraigned in Patterson Town Court and was released without bail pending a future court hearing in Southeast.

The top charge under the state’s penal code is punishable upon conviction by a maximum of seven years in a state penitentiary.
