CARMEL – Motorists driving throughout Putnam County in recent days are finding tree trimming crews removing tons of timber from large trees abutting utility lines resulting in traffic tie-ups.
Half a dozen workers, many perched high into the air in bucket trucks, were observed Thursday off Route 301 cutting back branches while flagmen directed traffic, to the dismay of motorists who were forced to wait in line while the undertaking proceeded.
The work is being done in conjunction with the New York State Electric and Gas Company’s initiative to prevent power outages due to trees and tree limbs falling onto utility lines during storm conditions.
