HAVERSTRAW – After 36 years of service, Haverstraw Town Police Chief Peter Murphy has retired from the force.

Murphy was appointed as a police officer in the department on February 29, 1988.

After being appointed in March 2005 as administrative sergeant, the village department merged into the town police department.

Over the years, he was promoted through the ranks and on June 24, 2017, he was appointed provisional chief. On June 25, 2018, he was made permanent chief.

During his time as chief, he oversaw adding an additional K9, started a drone unit, returning school resource officers to North Rockland High School and Fieldstone Secondary School, created a digital evidence management unit to assist the district attorney’s office with prosecution of arrested suspects, implemented foot patrols in the downtown business district, and navigated the department through the COVID-19 pandemic and bail reform.
