POUGHKEEPSIE – A City of Poughkeepsie firefighter was injured while battling a garage fire on Virginia Avenue Thursday afternoon.  The fire was reported at approximately 5:25 p.m. and as the firefighters were responding, embers traveled to a garage located two houses away, starting a fire there as well.

With firefighters battling the main fire at the initial call, additional firefighters went to the second garage and quickly extinguished the flames before the fire spread.

At the original fire, the heat from the flames destroyed the garage, at least one vehicle, a trailer, and other equipment.  The heat also damaged a large portion of the siding on the rear of the house.

A firefighter sustained a burn to his hand, possibly caused when a stored gas can exploded in the garage.  He was triaged at the scene and transported to a local hospital for additional treatment.

The fire was considered “knocked down” at 5:49 p.m. and firefighters began overhauling the area to verify the fire was completely extinguished.
