ALBANY – The Hudson Valley will receive over $13 million from a $462 million multi-state settlement from JUUL Labs Inc. for its role in the youth vaping epidemic that led to a rise in underage e-cigarette use nationwide.
New York State will receive a total of $112.7 million through the settlement, said State Attorney General Letitia James.
Area counties will receive the following amounts of funds:
- Dutchess – $1.1 million
- Orange – $1.4 million
- Putnam – $511,000
- Rockland- $1.2 million
- Sullivan – $481,474
- Ulster – $644,402
- Westchester – $2.2 million
School districts and BOCES to receive funding include:
- Yonkers City School District – $405,020
- Dutchess BOCES – $618,362
- Orange-Ulster BOCES – $799,258
- Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES – $818,082
- Rockland BOCES – $686,468
- Southern Westchester BOCES – $1.2 million
- Sullivan BOCES – $150,488
- Ulster BOCES – $317,582
The settlement funds will be used for evidence-based measures to combat underage vaping and e-cigarette addiction.
Counties and BOCES must dedicate the settlement funds they receive to programs in five categories:
- Public education campaigns to prevent e-cigarette use among young people
- Community, school, and university-based anti-vaping programs
- Vaping cessation services in communities, schools and colleges
- Enforcement of vaping laws and regulations
- Public health research into e-cigarette use among young people and the effectiveness of anti-vaping programs.
