Police are once again reminding people to take the keys out of their cars.

CARMEL – Twenty-four hours after Carmel Police reported ‘crimes of opportunity’ caused by thieves entering unlocked cars in greater Mahopac and taking personal items, Putnam Sheriff Kevin McConville noted his department had investigated a number of similar incidents in the Garrison-Cold Spring-North Highlands sections of Philipstown.

Earlier this month, the sheriff said investigators were dispatched to a residence on Lurch Lane in the Town of Philipstown for a stolen vehicle complaint. “It was determined that the vehicle was left unlocked with the keys inside and was possibly utilized by the suspects to commit larcenies from vehicles in the area. The vehicle was located later that day abandoned in the Town of Fishkill,” he said.

The sheriff’s office also took several reports from residents in the area of Jaycox Road in the Town of Philipstown on the morning of June 17, where they reported that items had been removed from unlocked vehicles in the overnight hours. The investigation into all of these incidents is ongoing, the sheriff said.

McConville reminded all residents to lock their vehicles and remove any valuables such as keys, cash and credit cards left inside.
