MAHOPAC – Residents of the South Lake and North Lake communities of Mahopac have been hit by what Carmel Police describe as ‘crimes of opportunity.”

Police received numerous complaints Monday of thieves entering unlocked cars during the overnight period and taking small electronic items, E-ZPass devices, personal items and loose change.

Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann said while “greater Carmel-Mahopac is a safe town no community is immune from such larcenies.”

The chief has asked all resident to follow the “9 p.m. routine: Lock your car and house doors; remove key fobs from all vehicles and take valuables inside the house; activate security lights and cameras. Help us to help you stay secure.”

Hoffman reminded the public: “If you see or hear anything suspicious, call 911 immediately. Try to get a description of the suspect and a vehicle he or she may be driving. Most of all never confront any would-be suspects.”
