MONTICELLO- A heat advisory is in effect for the next several days as temperatures will be in the 90s. It could feel even hotter with high humidity.
Residents are urged to be prepared for the hot weather, which is not typical for mid-June. Some meteorologists believe that this could mark the beginning of the hottest summer on record and John Liddle, Sullivan County’s Commissioner of Health recommends residents take certain precautions.
“Taking breaks from physical activity outside, making sure to take cool showers or baths, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day,” said Liddle. “Go to places with air conditioning like Walmart and libraries, take shelter from the sun in local parks, and if you’re lucky enough, make your way to a pool. If you‘re HEAP eligible you may be entitled to a free air conditioner if you have a doctor’s note that establishes a medical need.”
Older individuals are especially at risk in hot weather. Sullivan County’s Office of the Aging is providing additional support during the extreme heat and recommends people keep an eye on their older friends, family members, and neighbors.
