Retired cop and long-time Lake Carmel resident killed in Stormville

LAKE CARMEL- Funeral services will be held today Tuesday for a long time Lake Carmel resident, retired police officer Thomas Dunne who was killed last Thursday when his car was struck by a garbage truck operated by a resident of Brewster.

The tragic crash took place on Route 52 at Leetown Road in Stormville when according to East Fishkill Police, a Subaru driven by the 74 year old Dunne was exiting the secondary road attempting to enter Route 52 when the garbage truck owned by Tri-County Carting and operated by Frank Tompkins, 55, of Brewster slammed into the passenger vehicle.

East Fishkill Police Chief Derrick Cuccia said Dunne was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts of EMT’s from the East Fishkill Rescue Squad and emergency responders from Putnam County.

The chief added two juveniles riding with Dunne suffered non-life threatening injuries and both were transported to Vassar Brothers Hospital for treatment along with Tompkins who was also shaken by the tragedy.

Dunne and his family relocated to Stormville 17 years ago after the officer served with the NYPD for 28 years and the Somers PD for two decades.

Dunne is survived by his wife of 52 years, “Gigi” Pauline Dunne and his children, Diane Sampson, Thomas J. Dunne III and Christopher Dunne. Six grandchildren also survive along with two brothers and one sister.

Dunne was a charter member of the Putnam County Stephen Driscoll chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP.)

Chapter President Peter Conlin Saturday asked the community to “keep Tommy, his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”

Following Tuesday’s funeral mass at St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction, Dunne will be laid to rest at St. Denis Cemetery.
