Jewel thieves loot area stores; arrested in New Jersey

BEACON – Two alleged jewel thieves are in custody in New Jersey following a string of jewelry store break-ins, including stores in Beacon and Cold Spring.  On Thursday afternoon, Beacon police responded to Sky Diamond Jewelers at 226 Main Street for aa report of a burglary in process.

As officers arrived, they witnessed a car speeding away from the store and they began pursuing the vehicle.  The police terminated the chase when the fleeing vehicle began traveling at an unsafe speed across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.

Additional officers at Sky Diamond Jewelers determined that the front door had been shattered and thieves entered the store.  Beacon detectives responded to process the crime scene and launch an investigation.

The detectives determined that a group of suspects had burglarized Jewelry Designs in Danbury, CT on Thursday morning and also burglarized Jaymark Jewelers in Cold Spring.

Another police agency arrested two suspects in Newark, New Jersey, and recovered the stolen merchandise.

Beacon police say the investigation is ongoing and declined to provide additional information.
