NEWBURGH – A person was shot on Johnson Street in Newburgh on Wednesday night and the state police were needed to assist the city cops in containing a large crowd of people who gathered at the Montefiore St. Luke’s-Cornwall Hospital emergency room following the incident.

The city’s ShotSpotter system detected four to five gunshots in the vicinity of Johnson and First Streets around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The first arriving officers requested an ambulance to transport the victim who instead chose to be transported in a private vehicle.

While state troopers were monitoring the crowd at the hospital, city cops investigated the crime scene, including the collection of shell casings and photographs of a vehicle that had been struck by at least one bullet.  The crime scene remained active until approximately 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
