CARMEL- Putnam County celebrates its 212th birthday on Wednesday and a gala is planned for Tilly’s Table at Tilly Foster Farm in Southeast.

Putnam Historian Jennifer Cassidy noted the event will be honoring a number of individuals and institutions who make local history available to researchers and the public.

Plans call for honoring two former local historians—the late Denis Castelli and the late Gregory Amato who each assembled large and significant local history collections which have been donated by family members for archival preservation in the Putnam Historian’s collection remaining accessible for future generations.

History awards will also be presented in recognition of outstanding work and dedication to recording, preserving and promoting Putnam’s proud history.

The Preserving Public History Award will be granted to Paul Schmittman III and to Brian Vangor while the Exemplary Public History Award will be presented to Deborah Oswald of the Southeast Museum and to Josephine Bach of the Putnam History Museum.

Carmel School District educators Denise Santalis, Keith Reilly and Rob Buccheri will be honored with the Exemplary Public History in Schools Award.

Lifelong Putnam resident George Whipple will also be recognized for his many contributions to history and the preservation of Putnam County.

Wednesday’s program will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.
