KINGSTON- Kingston is one step closer to following New York City’s lead by installing school zone speed cameras in three locations in the city.  The installation of speed cameras requires state authorization and on the final day of legislative session, Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha passed the bill that brings speed cameras one step closer to reality.

“Driving above the posted speed limit is a factor in 29 percent of traffic related fatalities nationwide,” said Shrestha.  “The danger is magnified in school zones where large numbers of students are arriving by bus or on foot and are often outside during the school day.”

According to Shrestha, there have been 15 fatal crashes in Kingston between 2005 and 2021.  The Assemblymember sees the first three cameras as a “pilot” and hopes to authorize the installation of more both in the City of Kingston and the surrounding area.
