CARMEL – Authorities have identified the man killed in a motorcycle crash with a bus last Friday afternoon as a resident of Denville, New Jersey.

Putnam County Undersheriff Thomas Lindert identified the victim as 62-year-old Peter Leist.

He was killed when his two-wheeler rounded a curve and plowed into a small bus in front of a group home located at 3444 Route 301 in Carmel.

Nine-one-one calls sent emergency responders racing to the scene of the crash that was located about a half-mile west of the Gipsy Trail Road intersection.

Putnam County Sheriff’s Office personnel were joined by Carmel and Kent Police along with members of the Carmel and Kent Fire Departments, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Empress Paramedics and the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services but despite their efforts the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Putnam authorities summoned assistance from the New York State Police and an accident reconstruction team investigated the tragic crash.

Lindert said the two-wheeler was traveling westbound west of Gipsy Trail Road and after passing several vehicles by crossing over double yellow lines, slammed into the bus traveling in the opposite direction and operated by Lauren Hoffman of Carmel.

Lindert also reported a second serious motorcycle crash that occurred on Friday night along Route 22 near Sodom Road in Southeast.

Police said a vehicle operated by 52-year-old Christine Bueti of Katonah, was making a left turn out of a restaurant driveway to head southbound when it was struck by a northbound motorcycle operated by 22-year-old Marvin Espanaventura of Brewster.

The cyclist was transported to Danbury Hospital in serious condition, authorities said.
