MAHOPAC – A rapid response by firefighters who were assisted by several neighbors averted a catastrophe for a Mahopac Falls family.

Nine-one-one calls reporting a house fire Sunday on West Lake Boulevard near the intersection of Rockledge Road sent Mahopac Falls firefighters to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found an air conditioning unit on the exterior of the wood frame dwelling malfunctioning with flames shooting up the side of the home to its peak.

A neighbor spotted the fire and after calling 911 grabbed a garden hose and began to wet down the burning exterior of the residence. When fire crews arrived moments later, two hand lines were stretched to the scene and the blaze was extinguished.

Fire officials Monday said as a result of the quick actions of the neighbor, the fire was contained to the exterior of the residence, preventing further damage to the property. No injuries were reported.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Mahopac and Mohegan Lake Fire Departments along with the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Carmel Police, Putnam Paramedics, Putnam Fire Investigation Team and Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services Battalion 16 Coordinator George Wahlers.
