POUGHKEEPSIE – Officers from multiple agencies arrested the dangerous felon who sent two cops to the hospital after a traffic stop earlier this month.  Twenty-nine-year-old Poughkeepsie resident Diamond Ince was taken into custody on Main Street in Poughkeepsie on May 29.  Police had been searching for him since a Main Street traffic stop in which Ince is alleged to have struck  Poughkeepsie cops while trying to flee a traffic stop on May 12, 2024, on the 600 block of Main Street in the city.

The Mid Hudson News article reported from the scene on May 12 can be found here.

Poughkeepsie Police Sergeant Terrance Bream says that Ince was arrested by City of Poughkeepsie cops, assisted by state troopers, and agents from the Dutchess County Drug Task Force.

Ince, a four-time convicted felon, has been charged with assault for the May 12 incident and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance as a result of being found with a large quantity of drugs on Wednesday.  He was processed at police headquarters arraigned, and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail.

On Sunday, May 12, at approximately 10 p.m., Poughkeepsie officers conducted a traffic stop of a red Lexus G350 with North Carolina license tags.  The car pulled into a parking space but then backed into two marked police SUVs performing the stop.  The driver then rammed into the rear passenger door, causing it to strike one of the officers.  The contact sent the cop airborne and he was knocked unconscious when he landed on the sidewalk.  The police SUV struck the other officer’s foot when the suspect rammed into it.

The driver sped away with his passenger and abandoned the Lexus in the vicinity of Winnikee Avenue and Cottage Street, resulting in an unsuccessful manhunt.

The North Carolina license tags did not belong to the Lexus and the vehicle ID number from the car traces the vehicle to a Long Island resident of Shirley, New York.  The registered owner is not believed to be the driver who injured the officers on Sunday night.

Both officers, Detective Sergeant Sean Fitzgerald said following the accident, were treated at MidHudson Regional Hospital for their injuries and both were unable to return to work.  Since then, one of the officers has returned to duty while the other remains out of work due to the injuries sustained during the assault.

On the night of the incident, there was minimum staffing in the city police department, which resulted in assistance being requested from, and provided by, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
