Goshen, N.Y. – The Orange County Office for the Aging held its 12th annual Orange County Senior Health and Fitness Day at Thomas Bull Memorial Park in Montgomery on Wednesday.

“Being active and understanding the importance of taking care of different aspects of our health is critical, especially as we age. Staying physically, mentally, and fiscally fit all contribute to an individual’s overall well-being. Orange County’s Senior Health and Fitness Day is a wonderful event for Seniors to learn different ways to best take care of themselves,” Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus said. “The County’s Office for the Aging (OFA) is a terrific resource for our Senior population in Orange County. Commissioner Travis Ewald and the County Parks staff had Thomas Bull Memorial Park looking beautiful, and I enjoyed speaking with so many seniors about their lives and interests.”

The purpose of Orange County Senior Health and Fitness Day is to encourage seniors to exercise, eat well, and have fun. Throughout the day, Healthy Orange, Patient Services, and the Orange County Medical Reserve Corps, all part of the Orange County Department of Health headed by Commissioner Alicia Pointer, conducted screenings and distributed information. Local businesses, healthcare providers, and vendors also sponsored and participated in the event. Lunch for guests was partially donated by ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc. and was prepared and served by OFA’s Central Kitchen.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day takes place in May in honor of Older Americans Month. The goal of the initiative is to keep older Americans healthy and fit. It is the country’s largest annual health promotion event for older adults.

“It was a terrific day,” said AnnMarie Maglione, Director of Orange County’s Office for the Aging. “The weather couldn’t have been better, and the event gets bigger and better every year. Such an important part of living a healthy life is interaction with others. This event promotes that connection and creates new friendships, especially for those living alone and feeling isolated.”
