MONTICELLO – It’s budget time in the Village of Monticello which has been financially strapped for years.

The village board has approved exceeding the state’s two percent property tax levy increase, which is required in case local officials think they may have to do that.

Mayor Rochelle Massey said the vote was just a precaution.

“Do I want to use it, absolutely not,” she said. “I don’t think it’s fair to the taxpayers for bad management.”

The village had an independent audit of the finances through 2019 and has authorized one to look at the books since then.
