NEWBURGH – A student who attends South Middle School in the City of Newburgh was assaulted by a group of adults once the student left the school grounds on Friday, Principal Roderick Phoenix said in a letter to students, families, faculty and staff.

He did not say if the victim was a boy or girl; however, he said a female student tried to intercede and was assaulted as well.

Both students were assessed  by the school nurse with one being transported to the hospital, Phoenix said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s deputy, security personnel, school administrators, and Newburgh City Police responded to the incident scene.

The principal asked anyone with videos of the incident to contact Newburgh City Police.

“This behavior is not welcomed and will not be tolerated,” he wrote. “We rely on our parents/guardians and families to act as role models for our children. We expect our parents/guardians, families, and community members to partner with our school to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all of our scholars.”
