HIGHLAND – Highland Rotary Club will join forces with more than 800 Rotary Clubs, over 30,000 Rotarians, and thousands of volunteers, spanning 10 states and five countries on Saturday, May 18th to recognize Rotary International’s Annual Day of Service.

The Highland Rotary Club is conducting a three-pronged “Day of Service” initiative: a blood drive, a supply drive for care packages for deployed military troops, and a beautification project at the American Legion.

“Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood,” says Highland Rotarian Pete Fiorese, a member of the Highland Rotary Club’s planning committee. “Your donation can save up to three lives. It is a simple act with a profound impact.”

The Blood Drive will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Highland United Methodist Church, located at 57 Vineyard Avenue, Highland during the Town of Lloyd Springfest in the hamlet. To make a reservation, call 1-800-933-2566 or visit highlandrotaryclub.com for a link to rgister online.

The Highland Rotary Club is also partnering with the Highland High School Interact Club to collect items for care packages to send to our active service members abroad.

“These brave individuals sacrifice so much for our country, and now it’s our turn to give back to them,” said Rotary Day of Service planning committee chair Ruy Alencar. “Every item donated brings comfort, smiles, and a reminder that they’re appreciated.”

Items are being collected at drop-off boxes located at Brick House Resellers at 3650 Route 9W in the Hannaford Plaza and Vineyard Commons. Interact has collection boxes at Highland High School. Items are also being accepted during Springfest at the Rotary tent, which will be located near the Methodist Church at 57 Vineyard Avenue.

Items being collected include necessities (such as hygiene products, socks, and underwear); non-perishable snacks like gum, granola bars, beef jerky, water flavor packets, hot sauce packets and condiments (nothing that melts, please!); and simple pleasures such as decks of cards, frisbees, puzzles, and books, which can provide much-needed relaxation during downtime.
