NEWBURGH – Several people were left homeless when a fire raged through two buildings on Carter Street in the City of Newburgh shortly after 11 p.m. Monday.
This was the second blaze in a little more than a week in Newburgh that gutted buildings and left several people homeless.

Flames and heavy smoke could be seen billowing from the two-story apartment homes at 59 and 61 Carter.  Firefighters said at least a dozen residents made it out safely.

Nine-year-old Anthony Trujillo said he heard his cousins screaming “fire” downstairs.   He said he woke up his parents and brother and helped them get out.

About 75 firefighters were on the scene well past midnight.  The cause of the three-alarm fire is under investigation.

This fire was right around the block from where another fire destroyed several apartment buildings on Lutheran Street a week ago Sunday.
