BEACON – The City of Beacon is no longer a debilitated community, but has been transformed into a vibrant one, Mayor Lee Kyriacou said in his state of the city address.

Delivered at Monday evening’s city council session, the mayor said it has undergone “a spectacular transformation” that continues.

“From a down-and-out factory town with a largely boarded up Main Street into a rejuvenated small city with a thriving Main Street, preserved history and natural beauty, the envy of the Hudson Valley,” he said. “That transformation did not happen by miracle or by accident, but rather by thinking the city’s direction, thoughtful zoning ands other changes documented in our comprehensive plan, and decades of graduate change led by those who love and serve the city.”

Kyriacou said the city has adopted a strong financial discipline, improved public safety with a largely professional firefighting force and a new firehouse under construction, enhanced quality of life, climate leadership and good government.

The mayor said the city still has challenges ahead of it similar to those faced by other municipalities.
