NEW YORK – The New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors (NYSAPLS) is highlighting the achievements of the surveying profession to celebrate National Surveyors Week, which runs from March 17-23, 2024.

“The roots of surveying are etched into every corner of New York State. In fact, we are currently celebrating the bicentennial of the Erie Canal, the development of which can largely be attributed to the work of surveyors. As we recognize the important contributions of past surveyors, the photo contest NYSAPLS holds each year during Surveyors Week documents the work of modern surveyors for generations to come. I welcome all, young and not so young, to learn more about the profession and how it has shaped your community,” said Jeremy Thompson, President of the New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors.

From New York State’s iconic shape to the development of the Erie Canal, surveyors have played an integral role in the foundation of the Empire State. The famous 1811 Plan which gave Manhattan its iconic grid formation was built in part thanks to surveyors who transferred the lines from paper to pavement. The wilderness of the Adirondacks was charted and surveyed by surveyors, such as Verplanck Colvin, who traversed the terrain and contributed to our modern day understanding of the region. Today, the legacy of surveyors is kept alive by the work of modern surveyors throughout NYSAPLS’ 18 regional associations. The annual photo contest held by the association to celebrate National Surveyors Week provides an opportunity to document the work of surveyors in New York today for the generations to come. NYSAPLS encourages New Yorkers across the state to learn more of the important role surveying continues to have in their community.

Recently NYSAPLS received recognition from the NYS Legislature regarding Surveyors Week in New York. NYS Senator Stavisky sponsored a resolution adopted by the Senate on March 6th memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim March 17 t0 23, 2024, as Surveyors Week in the State of New York in conjunction with the observance of National Surveyors Week.

The New York State Association of Land Surveyors is committed to assisting and promoting the profession of land surveying, and each year looks forward to a week of celebration with our members. NYSAPLS currently represents over 1,200 licensed land surveyors across the state and is dedicated to the promotion of its members and the land surveying profession as a whole.
