MIDDLETOWN- HONOR, a temporary home to over 100 adults and children in Middletown, has opened the state’s first dedicated sensory space for young children living at the shelter.

The new, state-of-the-art “sensory rooms” provide a calming environment where children can reduce their sensory overload while enjoying specially selected tools and toys, according to Chris Molinelli, executive director of HONOR.  “Setting a remarkable precedent, this project is the first of its kind in New York State to be situated in a living shelter,” he said.

The sensory spaces were designed to create a welcoming and nurturing environment and includes a variety of books, craft supplies, educational materials and furnished individual spaces where young children may find respite.  Lighting, murals and sensory sensitive materials were carefully curated to enhance the space.

In addition to the new sensory spaces, the family shelter also offers meals, educational support, school transportation, outdoor play areas, indoor areas including the Merlin’s Magic Space outfitted by Legoland, as well as vital services for individuals and families.

“The Sensory Rooms at HONOR are a symbol of compassion, inclusivity and progress, underscoring our collective ability to create change that uplifts and transforms lives,” said Molinelli.

HONOR recognizes the following organizations for support of this effort:  Orange County Think Differently, Pediatric Occupational Therapy Solutions, SUNY Orange Occupational Therapy Program, Keller Williams Hudson United Team, Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan, Light it Up Blue, Bruderhof, M&T Bank, and Orange Bank and Trust.
