WHITE PLAINS – A Yonkers may who had eluded police for a year after fatally shooting a 20-year-old man in Yonkers in 2020, has been sentenced to 22 years in state prison.

Jonathan Planas, 34, who has a prior felony conviction, pled guilty on December 18, 2023 to manslaughter in the shooting death of Alvaro Vigueras Medina. He will also be subject to five years of post-release supervision.

District Attorney Miriam Rocah said on October 10, 2020 at about 1:30 in the morning, got out of a Mercedes Benz and opened fire on the victim who was walking on Lawrence Street in Yonkers, striking him once in the torso. Medina ran to the lobby of a nearby building, collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The two did not know one another.

Following the incident, Planas got back into the car and drove away.

Investigation using surveillance footage, witness interviews and ballistic evidence led to the arrest of Planas at a residence in Yonkers on October 4, 2021.

A news release from the DA’s office gave no reason for the shooting.
