POUGHKEEPSIE – The United States Coast Guard has recognized three members of law enforcement for their efforts to protect the Hudson River and all who use it, both for business and pleasure.  Coast Guard Rear Admiral Zeita Merchant was present for the presentations held during the quarterly meeting of the American Maritime Security Committee with more than 100 stakeholders in attendance.

Ulster County Sheriff’s Deputy Joe Steyer, a familiar face among boaters on the river, was recognized for his “unwavering commitment to the AMSC” through his assistance with exercise planning with other agencies and is considered to be a significant contributor to the “success of the AMSC.”

Sergeant John Butcher of the Westchester County Police Department has organized, planned, and facilitated six exercises on the Hudson River and Long Island Sound for the past three years, according to the Coast Guard.  “From using NY waterway ferries for evacuations on the Hudson to submerging a vehicle in the Long Island Sound for a dive operation. John has always been a great advocate for training,” the commendation read.

Sergeant Joe Marlorgio of the State Police Aviation Unit was recognized for his coordination of air support, including the use of unmanned aerial systems (drones) for incidents in or near the Hudson River.  He provided the technological advice and support that allows video from UAS flights streamed directly to the command center.
