Self-inflicted gunshot takes life of Ulster Sheriff’s employee in County Law Enforcement Center

KINGSTON – An employee of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office is dead, the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the facility, sheriff’s officials said.

At 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, the victim was provided emergency medical aid and rushed to Health Alliance Hospital’s Mary’s Avenue Campus in Kingston where the employee was pronounced dead.

The incident is being investigated by the State Police BCI with assistance from the sheriff’s office.

Authorities did not say if the victim was a man or woman. Their name is being withheld out of respect and privacy of the family.

Meanwhile, County Executive Jen Metzger said that mental health “is an issue that affects us all, and we all need to support our loved ones and community members to seek help.”

She reminded everyone that should they experience suicidal thoughts or are in a mental health crisis, they can call 988 for the crisis hotline.
