MONTICELLO- A Sullivan County government employee has been arrested by state police and charged with five felony counts and six misdemeanor counts of fraud.  The specific charges include possession of a false instrument, offering a false instrument for filing, and issuing false certificates.

Sandra Nava, 53, of Monticello has been employed with Sullivan County for nearly 20 years.  During most of her time with the county, Nava worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and her duties at the DMV included processing transactions for state identifications.  Sources say Nava allegedly processed fraudulent transactions, including issuing false non-driver state identifications, on more than one occasion.

In 2023 Nava ended her employment with the DMV and started a position working at the Sullivan County Board of Elections where she is employed today.

Nava’s son launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for her legal defense.  According to her son, Nava is, “facing false fraud charges, allegedly orchestrated by individuals who wield political power.”  As of late Thursday evening, $120 from two donations was raised toward the $15,000 goal.

Calls to the State Inspector General’s office, who is said to be investigating the matter, have not yet been returned.
