Elderly man charged with manslaughter for assisting in suicide

KINGSTON – Following a lengthy investigation into an alleged suicide in a hotel room at the Washington Avenue Super 8 in Kingston, a Tucson, Arizona man has been arrested on several felony charges.  The initial call regarding an unconscious and unresponsive person in the hotel room occurred on November 9, 2023.

First responders initially thought it was an unattended suicide until evidence revealed that a second person was in the room at the time of the death.  With the assistance of the Ulster County DA’s Office, Kingston police obtained an arrest warrant for 85-year-old Stephen Miller.  He was arrested on Friday, February 2, and charged with manslaughter for assisting or causing another person to commit suicide.  Miller is not related to the deceased.

Miller was arraigned in Ulster County Court on Friday.  Miller was also indicted, arrested, and arraigned on another manslaughter charge and two counts of assault.

The elderly Miller was remanded to the Ulster County Jail on $500,000 cash bail, $1,000,000 bond, or $3,000,000 partially-secured bond.
