HILLCREST – A 53-year-old Hillcrest man is believed to have shot and killed a 56-year-old woman before fleeing to Connecticut where he took his own life, Ramapo Town Police said Wednesday night.

Police had initially responded to Inwood Drive in Hillcrest at 9 a.m. for a report of gunshots and tht’s where they found the woman laying on the ground suffering from several gunshot wounds.

She was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigation determined the suspect, Lawrence Byrd, had fled to Connecticut, where he was located with the assistance of Stamford Police. Police said he took his own life.

The investigation is continuing into what police said was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the general public.

Ramapo Police were assisted by the Rockland County Sheriff’s and District Attorney’s offices, New York State Police, Norwalk Police, Stamford Police and the Rockland County Intel Center.
