POUGHKEEPSIE – Shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, City of Poughkeepsie police, fire, and EMS were dispatched to a report of a car into a utility pole in the vicinity of 283 Church Street.  The 911 dispatch advised that the driver was possibly unconscious.

As emergency personnel were arriving, they were advised that the driver was attempting to flee on foot.  He made it approximately 50 feet before stopping in front of 5 Virginia Avenue, where he appeared to be friends with the occupants.

The subject’s car had struck and knocked down a utility pole that held a transformer at the cul-de-sac on Virginia Avenue where it meets Church Street.  The fallen power lines interrupted electric service to a large portion of Virginia Avenue.

The subject was treated at the scene and transported for evaluation at a local hospital.  Tow operators were unable to move the wrecked vehicle, with North Carolina registration, until Central Hudson utility workers relocated the downed electrical wires.

Once removed, the vehicle was going to be impounded by police.

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, the accident was still under investigation.
