Sheriff asks for public’s help solving death of SUNY New Paltz student

NEW PALTZ – Ulster County Sheriff Juan Figueroa is asking for the public to help him bring a motorist who killed a SUNY New Paltz student to justice.  The fatal hit-and-run accident occurred on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 on Route 208 in New Paltz, between Hawk Drive and Cross Creek Road at approximately 5:10 PM.
According to Sheriff Figueroa, his deputies responded on Wednesday to a report of a person found dead on the side of the road (Route 208).  Responding deputies found a victim, now identified as 22-year-old NYC resident Raymond Rattray, deceased, approximately 20 feet from the roadway.  The initial investigation determined that Rattray was a SUNY New Paltz student.
The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal car versus pedestrian accident on Route 208 in the Town of New Paltz involving a SUNY New Paltz student.
Following the initial investigation, Sheriff Figueroa’s office determined that Rattray was walking home from class at approximately 5:10 PM on the shoulder of the southbound lane of Route 208 and was struck by a dark sedan that was also traveling southbound.
The vehicle, which sustained front-end damage to the passenger side, fled the scene.
The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted with this investigation by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, State Police BCI, the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, SUNY New Paltz Police, and the Town of New Paltz Police Department.
