Wappinger man going to prison after raping mentally disabled person

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin has sentenced 42-year-old Kawliga Shapiro to five-and-a-half years in prison for each of the two counts of rape, for a total of 11 years in prison.  He is also subjected to 10 years of post-release supervision for each of the two convictions.  The parole sentences will run concurrently, for a total of 10 years.

Shapiro had admitted to having sex on two occasions with an individual who is mentally incapable of consent.

The rapes took place in 2022.  After an investigation by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office, Shapiro was arrested in August 2023.
