BEACON – The Beacon City Council has gone on record as opposed to the Central Hudson Gas and Electric’s proposed rate increases for the delivery of electricity and natural gas.

Mayor Lee Kyriacou said the double-digit hikes are exorbitant, especially given the ongoing issues with billing that the utility has been facing for over a year.

“It certainly doesn’t give a lot of credit to the ability that they have been through such a difficult time in terms of billing,” he said. “And I understand there are lots of issues, but it just looks pretty bad.”

Beacon’s opposing is the latest of many municipalities that have gone on record with the State Public Service Commission (PSC).

The utility has provided a case to the PSC to support the request.  Speaking to the rate case, Central Hudson spokesman Joseph Jenkins previously indicated, “Central Hudson will continue to highlight the need for continued investment in the energy system, including for updating and replacing aging infrastructure, enhancing responsiveness to severe weather events, and complying with NY State’s clean energy policies.”
