POUGHKEEPSIE – City firefighters in Poughkeepsie battled a small house fire on Friday morning near Vassar Brothers Medical Center.  The report of the fire came in at approximately 9:25 a.m. and the fire department responded to the Young Street address within three minutes.

First-arriving firefighters encountered a small fire in the kitchen that had spread to the wall and they quickly went to work.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and extinguished a short time after the firefighters were on the scene.  The house sustained fire, smoke, and water damage along with a kitchen window and surrounding framework that were removed to prevent the fire from spreading in the walls.

The initial investigation indicates that an unattended burning candle ignited the kitchen curtains, leading to the spread of the flames.

No injuries to first responders or civilians were reported at the scene.
