WALLKILL- State Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) has delivered a $50,000 grant to Pets Alive in the Town of Wallkill for their new shelter, which is nearing completion.  Pets Alive is one of the oldest no-kill animal shelters in the United States.

Becky Tegze, the Executive Director of Pets Alive, explained the need for the new shelter.

“We are currently housing our dogs in a kennel and working out of a facility that is over 50 years old,” said Tegze.  “We have done needs assessment studies, we had two of them done, and everyone agreed that refurbishing what we had was not the best use of donor dollars, and to move forward with new construction.”

Skoufis is an animal lover and he was able to secure a grant to help with the cost of construction of the new facility.

“Because at the end of the day, the doors can’t open until they hit their fundraising goals.  So we’re giving them this grant so they can hit that number,” he said.

As the building nears completion, which is expected in the early part of 2024, the capital campaign is only half-way to it’s goal.

Tegze says this time of year is ideal to consider a tax-deductible donation to the capital campaign.  To make a donation, contact info@petsalive.org or 845-386-9738.
