NEWBURGH – Major categories of crime in the City of Newburgh are down when comparing the first 10 months of 2023 to figures from 10 years ago, Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez said.

Violent crimes  are down 14 percent, crimes with firearms are down 33 percent and property crimes decreased by six percent, he said.

The commissioner said one statistic stands out well above all the others.

“Fifty-two percent year-to-date decrease in bullet-to-body-shootings. Among the 28 GIVE jurisdictions across 21 counties in New York State, including both upstate and Long Island, our city stands out,” he said. “We are on track to achieve the largest decline in shootings for 2023 in the entire state,” he said.

Gomerez said those stats represent “real positive change” in the city.
