TOWN OF CORTLANDT– As the Indian Point nuclear power plant closure continues, all the spent fuel from its three units has now been transferred to 127 fuel casks.

Tom Congdon, chairman of the Indian Point Closure Task Force Wednesday said that was a significant milestone.

“The spent fuel has been dispersed into scores of dry cask canisters. So, for the host communities, for the metropolitan area, this is a notable milestone, a significant safety achievement that we have reached here, and the state has been pushing for 15 or 16 years,” he said.

The Indian Point Closure Task Force and the Indian Point Decommissioning Oversight Board meet periodically to inform the public of the ongoing process of closing this nuclear power plant, operated by Holtec International, in Westchester County.

Eventually, the fuel casks of highly radioactive spent fuel will be moved to other parts of the United States for permanent storage, Congdon said.
