WALLKILL- Weeks after election day and following the tabulation of all absentee and affidavit ballots the race for supervisor of the Town of Wallkill is tied between incumbent Republican George Serrano and Democrat Neil Meyer.  Meyer is a member of the town board and is a former deputy supervisor of the town.

As of Wednesday, each candidate had exactly 1,910 votes.

The law requires a hand recount of all votes in elections with margin is less than one-half of one percent, and on Tuesday the board of elections will begin its manual review process.

If the race is still tied after the manual count neither candidate will be seated as supervisor and the post will be considered vacant.  When the new town board is seated in January, among their first tasks will be to fill the vacancy, which could be a challenge because the makeup will be two Democrats and two Republicans.  The interim supervisor could serve for the year with another election held in November 2024 or a special election could take place sooner, if ordered by the Governor.
