POUGHKEEPSIE – A 74-year-old Dover man was killed Tuesday in a car accident on Route 22 near Reservoir Road in Pawling at approximately 12:30 p.m.  The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the collision.

Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Captain John Watterson says that Robert Tompkins was traveling northbound on Route 22 when his GMC Terrain struck a Jeep Cherokee that was making a left turn onto Route 22 from Reservoir Road.  Tompkins was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie where he was pronounced dead.

The operator of the Jeep was transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.  Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles.

At this time, according to Watterson,  the primary factor in the crash appears to be a failure to yield the right-of-way on the part of Tompkins.  The captain did indicate that the investigation is being conducted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office’s Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit.

If anyone was in the area of Route 22 and Reservoir Rd in Pawling at approximately 12:30 pm on Tuesday, November 14, 2023,  and thinks they may have witnessed the crash itself or the events leading up to it, they are urged to contact Detective Wilber at 845-486-3826 or by email at bwilber@dutchessny.gov.
