GOSHEN – A 28-year-old Newburgh man pled guilty in Orange County Court on Tuesday to manslaughter in connection with the stabbing death of another man near the 411 Lounge on Broadway in the City of Newburgh.

The incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. on May 28, 2023. Eric McCollum was alleged to have stabbed the victim, 38-year-old Jose Soto.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said McCollum was charged with the murder that stemmed from an argument.

  • “They engaged in a verbal altercation and during the altercation, Mr. McCollum produced a knife and stabbed the victim one time during this altercation. As a result of that, the individual succumbed to the injuries from the stab wound,” he said.

McCollum stabbed Soto once in the torso, piercing his heart.

When sentenced next month, McCollum is expected to be sentenced to 15 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision.
