MONTROSE- In support of lung health and Veteran wellness, VA Hudson Valley is hosting its second annual National Lung Cancer Screening (LCS) Day, November 11, 2023 —coinciding with Veterans Day — to provide best-in-class care to those who have served their country.

Emphasizing the importance of lung cancer screenings for eligible Veterans, VA Hudson Valley will engage in screening awareness outreach efforts from November 6 through November 11.

Castle Point Medical Center and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Hospital will have informational tables from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  However, only those who attend Castle Point can receive a CT screening on-site directly after seeing a provider who confirms they meet the criteria.  For eligible Veterans unable to undergo same-day screenings, reach out to your health care team or send a message through MyHealtheVet to inquire about lung cancer screening.

“Our dedication to the health and well-being of our Veterans drives us to promote early detection and provide essential resources for those at risk of lung cancer,” said Dawn Schaal, medical center director, VA Hudson Valley.

“Collaborating with other esteemed organizations across our communities for National Lung Cancer Screening Day is one way we continue to improve lung cancer screening access.”

Lung cancer is a common and dangerous cancer that affects many Veterans. VA medical facilities diagnose and treat nearly 8,000 cases of lung cancer each year.  But it is important to catch the cancer early, as it is treatable in its early stages.

To help raise awareness and promote lung cancer screening, the VA has partnered with the National Lung Cancer Roundtable, which includes the American Cancer Society, the American College of Radiology, and the Radiology Healthy Equity Coalition.  As part of this initiative, VA Hudson Valley is working to educate Veterans about lung cancer screening and encourage smokers to take advantage of VA’s smoking cessation services.
