NEWBURGH – A man wanted by Newburgh City Police in connection with a shootout with another man on the 200 block of Broadway on the afternoon Thursday, July 6, was arrested Wednesday afternoon after police received a call from a person who said they heard a man threaten to pull a gun on another and observed him motion like he had a firearm.

The caller provided a description of the individual and officers spotted someone fitting that description on Dubois Street. A foot pursuit ensued, and the suspect entered an elderly relative’s residence on South Miller Street.

After a brief time, he came out voluntarily and was taken into custody.

City Councilman Omari Shakur was at the South Miller location and without any information about what was going down, accused the police of overreacting.

“Overwhelming force, 19 police cars out here, 19 police cars out here for what. Overwhelming police force in your community,” he said. “Everybody, go back to January 6 when they took over the White House. Weren’t that many cops there during that,” he said with a chuckle. “why are they coming into our community after our kids with such overwhelming force.”

Police charged the suspect, whose name was not made public, with obstructing governmental administration for this incident and criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment in connection with the July shootout.
