NEW CITY – Just 10 days after Clarkstown officials raided a home at 295 North Hempstead Road in New City that illegally housed over 30 migrants, the town announced on Thursday that they have found a second flophouse, this one at 168 Clarkstown Road. This one had 25 people living in it, many believed to be recently arrived immigrants. Some were living in the attic and basement.

Town Supervisor George Hoehmann said had there been a fire there, people would have perished.

“These flophouses and illegally converted single-family homes will not be tolerated here in Clarkstown. The safety and security of our residents and first responders is paramount to me,” he said.

In the meantime, Rockland County and Clarkstown investigators found 339 properties – 37 of which are in Clarkstown – some of which have many people living in them and some out of compliance.

They are all managed by the same company, First Choice Property Management of Monsey, Hoehmann said.

The town is taking court action against the owners of those houses that are out of compliance.
